Introduction

Nexus Infrastructure is a leading provider of essential infrastructure services to the UK housebuilding and commercial sectors. Operating through three specialist divisions, the company delivers a broad range of expertise tailored to the evolving needs of the construction and energy markets. TriConnex provides multi-utility infrastructure services, ESmart Networks focuses on energy transition and network solutions, and Tamdown delivers civil engineering and infrastructure works.

Across all divisions, Nexus Infrastructure places customer focus at the centre of its operations, ensuring high standards throughout the design, procurement, and delivery lifecycle. With large volumes of operational and financial data generated across the business, the organisation required a more effective way to transform this information into meaningful, accessible insight for decision-makers.

Challenges

Nexus Infrastructure’s existing reporting systems lacked the capability to provide simple, clear, and interactive dashboards for monitoring sales, financial performance, cash flow, and wider business metrics. Each of the three divisions maintained its own internal database and reporting process, resulting in siloed information and inconsistent reporting methods.

Reports were primarily generated in Excel or PDF format and designed for back-office use rather than strategic analysis. While these reports contained important operational and financial information, they were time-consuming to compile, difficult to compare across divisions, and unsuitable for executive-level reporting or board meetings.

The business required a unified reporting solution capable of consolidating data from all three divisions into a single, consistent environment. This needed to support detailed and highly specific reporting requirements while providing intuitive dashboards that could be relied upon for monthly board reporting and performance monitoring.

Adding further complexity, the solution needed to integrate not only structured SQL database information but also critical operational data held within Excel workbooks distributed across multiple file shares.

Our Solution

The project began with the design and implementation of a centralised data warehouse, bringing together information from Nexus Infrastructure’s three divisions into a single reporting environment. The objective was to create a consistent and scalable data model capable of supporting both current and future reporting requirements.

A key focus during this phase was establishing a robust data structure that ensured all required business and financial metrics could be captured accurately. Standardising data across previously separate systems presented a significant challenge, particularly where divisions used differing formats and reporting conventions.

To support the full reporting landscape, the solution incorporated data from both SQL databases and complex Excel workbooks. A combination of a custom .NET console application and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages was implemented to automate the monthly import and transformation of data into the warehouse. These automated processes ensured that information remained accurate and up to date whenever finance teams refreshed their source workbooks, reducing manual effort and improving reporting reliability.

Once the central data warehouse was established, dedicated SQL views were developed to simplify and optimise data retrieval for individual reporting requirements. This approach ensured that complex datasets could be transformed into streamlined reporting layers tailored to specific business metrics and dashboard components.

The reporting front end was delivered using Power BI, providing a modern business intelligence platform capable of presenting complex data through clear and interactive visualisations. Three core dashboard suites were developed covering:

  • Sales performance and pipeline reporting
  • Cash flow and debtors analysis
  • Financial performance and management reporting

As each Nexus Infrastructure division required its own tailored reporting experience, separate versions of each dashboard were produced, resulting in nine bespoke Power BI dashboards delivered across the organisation.

The completed solution provided Nexus Infrastructure with a unified business intelligence and reporting platform that transformed how data was accessed and used across the organisation. By replacing fragmented Excel and PDF reporting with automated Power BI dashboards and a centralised data warehouse, board members and senior stakeholders gained faster access to consistent, accurate, and visually accessible information.

The new reporting environment reduced manual reporting effort, improved confidence in business data, and enabled more informed decision-making across sales, finance, and operational teams. With automated monthly data processing and scalable infrastructure in place, Nexus Infrastructure now benefits from a future-ready reporting solution capable of evolving alongside the business.
